Health Concerns Raised Over Possible Flu Epidemic in Tokyo

02/02/2014 (Japan) – The local press reported on Saturday, 1 February, that Tokyo health officials had issued an influenza epidemic warning amid concerns that the capital is a high-risk area. From 20 to 26 January, each hospital in Tokyo reportedly saw an average of 29.7 patients with influenza-related symptoms. While the criteria for an outbreak to be labelled as an epidemic is an average of 30 people per medical institution, authorities said that the situation merits an official public warning.
The risk rating for Japan is currently LOW. Flu symptoms include runny nose, fever, cough, fatigue, head and body aches. Even though flu vaccines are not 100 per cent effective, they are still the best defence against the disease. As pregnant women, the elderly, those with chronic diseases and children are at a greater risk of being affected by the disease, they should seek medical treatment as soon as they experience any of the symptoms common to the virus. While death from the flu is unlikely, the virus is a main cause of lost man-hours and operational disruptions. Those visiting or operating in Tokyo should consider a flu vaccination after discussing the pros and cons with a physician. They can also protect themselves through frequent hand washing and avoiding crowded public spaces.
