Planned Anti-Austerity Protest in Athens on 25 February, Potential for Localised Disruptions
Severity: 2 (Low)

02/22/2014 (Greece) – The Greek Communist Workers’ Union (PAME) has called for a demonstration in Athens for Tuesday, 25 February, to show its support for public physicians who are currently on strike over the government’s austerity drive. According to press accounts, the protest will be held outside the offices of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, located along Aristotelous Street, from 1800hrs (1600 UTC).
The risk rating for Greece is currently MODERATE. Doctors and medical workers at public institutions have embarked on a new series of protests since the government passed a bill earlier this month that aims to restructure the country’s public healthcare system. According to critics, the reforms would lead to pay cuts and/or job termination. It should also be noted that doctors from the National Organisation for Healthcare Provision in Greece (EOPPY) have also been on strike since November and it remains unclear when they will end their industrial action.
Those in Athens should stay abreast of the latest related developments, and stay away from the vicinity of the Ministry of Health and Welfare to minimise the risk of exposure to potential localised disturbances.
