05/13/2014 (Greece) – Unionized medical workers at government-run hospitals and clinics, as well as ambulance operators, are planning to go on 24-hour strike on Wednesday, 14 May. The health professionals will also hold a demonstration outside the headquarters of the Ministry of Health and Welfare on Aristotelous Street in Athens from 1200hrs (0900 UTC).
The strike and protest actions have been called to denounce poor working conditions and facilities, as well as low wages in the public health sector. The medical workers are also protesting against the government’s decreased budget for the health sector, planned privatization of a number of hospitals and clinics, as well as other austerity measures.
Those in Athens should ensure that they have access to private medical care given the potential for disruption to public hospitals and clinics. Insurance and other health care plans should also be examined to ensure that they provide for private treatment. Travelers should also avoid the vicinity of the Ministry of Health and Welfare in Athens from Wednesday noon to minimize the risk of exposure to potential localized disturbances.
