07/10/2014 (Cambodia) – Media reports on Thursday, 10 July, stated that an American had been found strangled to death on the outskirts of the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh. The victim, identified as William Bryan Glenn, was found at a dumpsite in Kok Roka commune in Prek Pnov district on Wednesday morning. His body was reportedly bruised and was wrapped in a curtain bound with duct tape.
Further details about the incident have yet to be reported, but an investigation by the local police has commenced in cooperation with the United States Embassy. Opportunistic and violent crime remains a persistent problem in many parts of Cambodia, especially in Phnom Penh and its environs. There have been reports of expatriates being robbed at gunpoint or burglars entering their homes. Institutional corruption, weak law enforcement, and the growing presence of organised crime groups are believed to have contributed to the problem.
Clients and travellers in Cambodia are advised to exercise caution and maintain good situational awareness of their surroundings at all times. They should avoid conspicuous displays of wealth and ensure that their possessions are properly secured. Any suspicious people, objects and activities should be reported to the relevant authorities as soon as possible.
