08/26/2014 (Turks and Caicos Islands) – Media reports on Monday, 25 August, indicated that Providenciales International Airport, the main international aviation facility in Turks and Caicos Island, had been shut down due to scattered heavy downpours, strong winds and poor visibility caused by nearby hurricane Cristobal. It remains unclear if operations have returned to normal at this juncture. All government offices in Providenciales and North Caicos islands, as well as commercial banks, were closed on Monday due to inclement weather.

In addition, local press accounts indicated that many parts of the country had been inundated. Localised flooding has also been reported in the capital, Grand Turk. There have been, however, no confirmed casualties resulting from the flooding.

Cristobal has unleashed heavy downpours and strong winds in Turks and Caicos Island since Friday evening, and the authorities have warned that that the unstable weather was likely to continue through at least Tuesday. Clean-up and repair operations have commenced, although hurricane-associated disruptions are expected to continue in the coming days given the impact of Cristobal on the country.

As such, those in Turks and Caicos Island should stay abreast of the latest weather-related updates and heed further instructions from the authorities. Clients should also review contingency measures to ensure business continuity. In addition, individuals should reconfirm their respective travel schedules before proceeding to a transportation hub, whilst motorists should exercise additional caution as well as avoid non-essential long-distance journeys due to hazardous roads conditions and flood associated disruptions.
