09/11/2014 (Australia) – Local reports indicated that an Australian national has been placed under isolation at the Gold Coast University Hospital in the Southport suburb of the Gold Coast, Queensland State, on Thursday, 11 September, after displaying symptoms similar to those associated with the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). The 25-year-old patient was accompanied by paramedics in full protective gear. According to health officials, the man had returned from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) two days prior and was taken ill shortly thereafter.

Despite the precautions being taken regarding the suspected case, the head of Gold Coast Health’s infectious diseases department, indicated following an examination that it was highly unlikely that the patient had contracted the potentially deadly EVD, adding that malaria was more probable. Further tests are being carried out, with results expected in the coming hours.

Ebola outbreaks have occurred in the DRC since 1976 when the virus was first discovered. The Central African country is currently battling a localised EVD outbreak in a rural area of the northern province of Equateur. Health officials in the DRC have identified the EVD strand currently present in Equateur as the less lethal Sudanese one. Those in Australia are advised that the case does not pose an increased risk of exposure to EVD at this juncture. Remain apprised of related developments.Copyright © 2014 Drum Cussac
