Government Warning Issued for Italy
Severity: 2 (Low)
Source: U.S. Department of State
10/02/2014 (Italy) – The Digos (Italian State Police) has informed the U.S. Consulate General in Naples that October 2, there will be a large demonstration of approximately 2000 people protesting the European Central Bank (ECB) near the Museum of Capodimonte. The ECB will be meeting at the Capodimonte Royal Palace. In preparation, local law enforcement plan to deploy 2,000 law enforcement officers including Polizia, Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza to ensure security and prevent possible violent demonstrations near the venue and in downtown Naples.
The Italian President will also be in Naples on October 2 to attend the 2014 European Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SME) Assembly with the EU Commissioner at the Maritime Station near the port. While there are currently no announced protests, the possibility for a spontaneous demonstration does exist. Expect heavy traffic congestion around the entire city of Naples for most of the day.
There is a potential for violence near the protest sites and U.S. citizens are advised to avoid the port and the demonstration area. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid the areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests or demonstrations. U.S. citizens are urged to monitor local news reports and to plan their activities accordingly.
