02/06/2015 (Mexico) – Media reports on Thursday, 5 February, indicated that eight alleged narco-criminals were killed in clashes in the northeastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas the previous day. According to authorities, gunfights erupted after security personnel responded to reports that the assailants had hijacked buses and used them to block a section of Highway 2 between the cities of Matamoros and Reynosa, which are located opposite the United States border cities of Brownville and McAllen in Texas, respectively.
Furthermore, a bomb was reportedly found outside the mayor’s office in Matamoros on Wednesday. The explosive device, however, was safely neutralised.
The identity of the assailants remains unclear, although members of Gulf and Zetas drug cartels are known to operate in Tamaulipas. It should be noted that the aforementioned clashes followed similar confrontations between security personnel and suspected narco-criminals in the same area on Monday. Information on these clashes has been limited as journalists had refused to cover them due to fears of retaliation by criminal elements, leaving residents to rely on social media for updates.
If travel to or through Tamaulipas, notably along Highway 2, is necessary, it is advised to consult a professional security provider before departure and follow the strictest of security measures, including, but not limited to, close protection, convoy travel and preparation of an evacuation plan. Potential overland travel disruptions should also be anticipated due to likely heightened security measures following the recent fatal gunfights. Clients operating in Tamaulipas should also ensure that security measures commensurate to prevailing threat level are in place.
