Pietermartizburg, South Africa Treatment Scenario – GeoBlue Has You Covered…

GeoBlue expatriate health plans provide routine, urgent and emergent coverage internationally.  All plans include medical evacuation and repatriation benefits.  Medical Benefits are covered at 100%  basis for treatment outside the United States, unless indicated otherwise on the benefit schedule.

The following medical scenario illustrates how the GeoBlue Voyager Choice Travel Medical plan works overseas in a real life scenerio.

Scenerio:  Medical Emergency
Location:  Pietermartizburg, South Africa
Situation:  Injury sustained during horseback riding accident
Diagnosis:  Radius, humerus and ulna fracture

Action Taken:

24 year old member fell from a horse and completely shattered her arm including the ulna, radius and humerus.  She was brought immediately to a GeoBlue contracted hospital, the Mediclinic Pietermartizburg.  Mediclinic operates 49 private hospitals through South Africa and Naimibia.  The quality of care in private hospitals in the region is considered to be good, with Johannesburg and Cape Town being the location of many well respected medical centers.

GeoBlue made direct payment arrangements at the hospital and obtained ongoing medical information from the treating physician.

Patient Outcome:

Emergency surgery was successfully performed.  It was determined that the member would be fitted with a special cast which would require medical clearance from the airlines prior to her long-haul flight.  Doctors in South Africa also required the patient to travel with a non-medical escort back to the United States.  GeoBlue worked with the airline medical treatment department to obtain the necessary clearance and flights in business class for member’s return to the United States.

Summary of Care Delivered

  • Medical costs in South Africa: $10,000
  • Cost of Medical Evacuation: $15,000

Total Incurred Charges:   $25,000

** U.S. domestic health plans pay emergency benefits outside the United States, subject to Silver deductible and 30% coinsurance for clinical services, hospitalization, surgery and post-operative care ($6,350 Out-of-pocket).  Emergency Medical Evacuation and Repatriation are generally not covered benefits.
