03/26/2015 (Thailand) – A local press report on Thursday, 26 March, indicated that paramilitary rangers killed four suspected insurgents and arrested 22 others in clashes in the southern province of Pattani on Wednesday evening. The fighting was allegedly triggered after rangers arrived at Ban Toh Jood village in Thung Yang Daeng district following information on the presence of armed men in the area. Specific details about the encounter remain unclear, although a military spokesperson claimed that the suspects were planning to carry out violent attacks in the district.
Near-daily attacks on security forces and civilians have taken place in the southern provinces of Narathiwat, Yala, Pattani and several districts of Songkhla since the resurgence of the Thai Muslim separatist insurgency in January 2004. While the majority of the attacks are described as relatively low-level, there have been periodic reports of high profile attacks in urban areas and against security forces. Foreigners are rarely targeted in such attacks, nonetheless, clients and travellers in the region are advised to maintain good situational awareness and report any suspicious persons, articles or activities immediately to the authorities.
