05/26/2015 (United Kingdom) – Media reports indicate that two explosive devices were found in Belfast in the last 24-hours. The first bomb was thrown at 2240hrs (2140hrs UTC) on the night of Monday, 25 May, in Strand Walk. The bomb was thrown in the garden of a house but failed to detonate. Explosive experts claim that the device had the capacity to cause substantial damages and/or injuries. A second explosive device was found on the morning of Tuesday, 26 May, in the Short Strand area in east Belfast. Police sealed off Lower Newtownards Road.

At this point, information concerning the aforementioned incidents remains limited. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the bombs, but the blame is likely to initially fall upon dissident republican outfits opposed to the peace process. A number of these groups are known to plant explosive devices near police stations and in public places to cause security alerts and increase sectarian tensions.

Personnel with interests and/or travel plans in Belfast on the afternoon of Tuesday are advised to exercise heightened situational awareness in public spaces and immediately report any suspicious object, person or activity to local law enforcement authorities. Clients should avoid as much as possible the Short Strand area in the coming 6-hour period to mitigate the risk of exposure to security operations.
