Travels to Mexico – Cost Effective Multi-Trip Travel Medical Insurance…

Outbound for Mexico…

International Travel to MexicoThere are many places in the world people travel to with great affection.  Because of its proximity, its beauty, and tremendous culture Mexico is a favorite place to travel to by many Americans.  Especially if you live in the Southwestern part of the United States, Mexico is an easy to reach destination full of adventure.  But with adventure comes certain hazards.  I grew up in Coronado, California which basically is in the middle of San Diego Bay.  In my youth Mexico was an easy place to day trip to because the border was just 15 minutes south of us.  In my youth I never thought about the need for an International medical plan… after all I was just going down to the restaurants located on the beach of the Baja Coast.  In hindsight it could have been a big mistake.  After all who needs International health insurance anyway… right?

Today I do believe things have changed a bit especially with our own health insurance industry here in the United States.  Today there are few benefits that will travel south with you.  With the vast amount of information we have at our fingertips it is easy to follow and see what our friends and family members might be doing at any point in time.  It is easy to see how often people travel to Mexico for days or even weeks simply by following your Facebook feeds.  I personally believe that most Americans simply have no clue as to what their current U.S. Domestic insurance will cover if they get sick or injured while in Mexico.  Frankly I don’t even think most give it a first thought before they travel.  But they need to.

There is a tremendous amount of misinformation about what your U.S. insurer will cover and what they will not.  Most people can’t even imagine that they could be the one in need of medical attention while enjoying Mexico’s incredible vistas.  But it does happen and the truth is your U.S. Domestic health plan is basically worthless and even worse they are not going to be able to help you locate medical care nor arrange for Medical Evacuation should a tragedy arise.  I also know that this topic in general is not one at the top of most people’s list.  But to be ignorant about your exposures when traveling abroad is not only NO EXCUSE it could end up being dangerous and expensive.

If you are a Senior and you are on Medicare it is important to note that Medicare stops the minute you leave the United States.  For those of you that a Medicare Supplement, assuming you have Plan F you have a single Lifetime Maximum of $50,000 for medical care.  The amount is only available to you as a reimbursement for medical expenses you have paid for while abroad.  It does not include Medical Evacuation should the need arise.  Basically it really is a NO benefit.

Recently I have been giving this topic a lot of thought.  All of my friends and associates know what I do and I am not shy about it either.  But I am amazed at how many people travel to Mexico (another country) and they don’t even make the attempt to find out what proper coverage would cost that could end up saving their life in the event of an emergency.  For example I just placed a young couple traveling to Baja for 10 days into one of our Single-Trip Travel Medical Plans.  The cost for  100% coverage including Emergency Medical Evacuation cost each one of them $21.00.  That is $2.10 a day – less than the cost of a drink at Starbucks!!  They were pleasantly surprised to find out that they could easily afford the coverage.

Personally, knowing what I do and because of what I do this all scares me.  Why, I ask would anyone take such a risk when the cost for providing yourself with the best protection offered is so low?  For some I think it is simply the hassle of looking into the coverage in the first place.  This does make sense to me because I know how difficult it is to obtain correct and current information about this very subject.  Others do call their insurance companies and ask if they are covered when traveling Internationally.  Most of the time they receive confusing information and much of the time they are told that they are covered abroad which is actually more of a half truth.  Most consumers don’t understand that what ever benefits they might receive they will be done so after the fact.  You will first have to pay for the services yourself and then upon your return to the United States you will then submit them for reimbursement.  This process will take 6-8 weeks and oh yeah make sure ALL of your claims and receipts are in English.

To be truthful the only thing that I know might be covered is for TRUE Emergency Services and ONLY Emergency Services.  The U.S. Insurer will more than likely NOT agree to make payment direct and in fact they are not even required to do so.  Plus they have little or no International resources abroad to help guide you when the care is needed.  That is not to say Mexico does not have acceptable healthcare because they do.  But whom will guide you to the proper level of care if needed that could in fact save your life?  Your U.S. Insurer will not send a medical team to evacuate you to the best level of care if needed nor do they have the resources.  No this is something everyone who travels to Mexico needs to address before their next trip(s).

Although obtaining a Travel Medical Plan before your departure is simple, easy and cost effective there are many people that simply forget to purchase a policy prior to their trip.  If you are traveling to Mexico once or twice a year we make it really easy to do.  But what about those who travel frequently throughout the year.  These trips may be as short as a few hours and as long as several weeks.  There is a really simple and effective way to make sure that your trips into Mexico are covered throughout the year each and every time you travel.  A Multi-Trip International Plan may be your best answer!

If you own or rent real estate properties in Mexico and you travel there several time per year AND none of your trips exceed 70 consecutive days that a Multi-Trip Trekker plan from GeoBlue is by far the most cost effective way to meet or exceed your travel insurance needs.  Check this out…

Emergency Medical Evacuation

GeoBlue Emergency Medical EvacuationWorld travelers need to properly protect themselves against financial exposure due to catastrophic medical events. If comprehensive travel medical benefits and assistance services are not secured before you travel, you could find yourself exposed to huge losses – both physical and financial. Though illness can strike at any time, when severe incidents occur overseas, lack of proper coverage can leave you the traveler with steep medical bills for less than sufficient care.

As a global traveler you need to be prepared for the possibility that you could find yourself in a location where the Medical Care is poor or inaccessible. In the event you find yourself in a situation where you need to be evacuated to an area where you can receive the appropriate level of care then you need to make sure your International coverage includes a comprehensive Emergency Medical Evacuation benefit. Medical evacuations are not a simple procedures and they can be extremely complicated and expensive. This must be available to you 24/7 no matter where in the world your travels take you. In addition you need a partner who is capable of organizing and caring out the evacuation no matter where you find yourself.

Considerations for any medical evacuation are:

  1. Evaluating the appropriateness of local health care providers
  2. Identifying the closest facility where a high level of care is available
  3. Determining the risk vs rewards of moving the patient
  4. Choosing the best method of transport (ie: ambulance, helicopter, fixed wing air ambulance)
  5. Securing the cooperation of the local treating physician, including a determination that the patient is stable enough to move
  6. Enlisting the most appropriate team to handle the transport (ie: doctor, nurses, therapist)
  7. Arranging for speedy and appropriate intake at the receiving facility
  8. Having someone on your side helping guide you through the whole process – that is GeoBlue…

Make sure when you travel, you travel with a full service, travel health plan that provides a higher level of protection and peace of mind than standard evacuation memberships offer. If you are not sure about your current plan or one you are considering make sure you get a copy of your certificate of coverage and read it. Make sure you have a complete picture of what you are buying. Then cover yourself with the Power of Blue. GeoBlue offers this type of comprehensive coverage and it is built into their Trekker Choice and Trekker Essential Multi-Trip Medical plans.
